When CuriousArchitecture designed an elegant granite-clad façade for the rear extension to a listed building to create a new 80-bedroom Malmaison Hotel in Aberdeen, they chose an advanced product developed by DuPont to provide lasting, reliable protection for the structure. Using the unique high-performance technology that has made DuPont™ Tyvek® a leading breather membrane, DuPont™ Tyvek® UV Facade is a pioneering new solution that provides even greater freedom to design open-jointed rainscreen cladding in the confidence that the sub-structure will withstand long-term UV and other weather exposure.
With an overall budget of £8,250,000, the project created 5,500 sq feet of stylish accommodation and facilities including a brasserie, bar, spa and gym. “As Aberdeen is a city mainly built from granite,” explains project architect Kenny Stephen, “it was a planning requirement that we used granite cladding on the new extension. And because it was a rainscreen system, it was important we chose a reliable product that could also deal with exposure to UV light.”
DuPont™ Tyvek® UV Facade bears the CE mark in accordance with EN 13859-2. After an extensive development and rigorous testing process (including 5,000 hours of simulated permanent exposure to UV radiation), DuPont™ Tyvek® UV Facade was found to be capable of protecting the insulation and the structure behind open jointed cladding for a very long time.
